Solution
Understand the Question
  • Let AB\text{AB} represent the vertical tower of height hh, and C\text{C} be the observation point on the ground such that BC=30 m\text{BC} = 30\text{ m}.
  • The angle of elevation to the top of the tower is ACB=30\angle \text{ACB} = 30^\circ.
  • Since the adjacent side (ground distance) is known and the opposite side (tower height) is required, we use the tangent trigonometric ratio: tanθ=OppositeAdjacent\tan \theta = \dfrac{\text{Opposite}}{\text{Adjacent}}.

Step 1 · Calculate the Height of the Tower

Let AB\text{AB} be the height of the tower and C\text{C} be the point on the ground with BC=30 m\text{BC} = 30\text{ m} and ACB=30\angle \text{ACB} = 30^\circ.Diagram 1

In right ΔABC\Delta \text{ABC} tan30=ABBC\tan 30^\circ = \dfrac{\text{AB}}{\text{BC}}

13=AB30AB=303\begin{aligned} \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}} &= \dfrac{\text{AB}}{30} \\[0.6em] \text{AB} &= \dfrac{30}{\sqrt{3}} \end{aligned}

Rationalising the denominator

AB=30×33×3=3033=103 m\begin{aligned} \text{AB} &= \dfrac{30 \times \sqrt{3}}{\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}} \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{30\sqrt{3}}{3} \\[0.6em] &= 10\sqrt{3}\text{ m} \end{aligned}
Answer

103 m10\sqrt{3}\text{ m}

Common Mistakes
  • Incorrect Trig Ratio: Using sin30\sin 30^\circ or cos30\cos 30^\circ instead of tan30\tan 30^\circ. When relating the opposite side (height) and adjacent side (base distance), always use the tangent ratio.
  • Unrationalised Denominator: Leaving the result as 303 m\dfrac{30}{\sqrt{3}}\text{ m} rather than multiplying the numerator and denominator by 3\sqrt{3} to obtain 103 m10\sqrt{3}\text{ m}.
