Question 11

  1. A TV tower stands vertically on a bank of a canal. From a point on the other bank directly opposite the tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is 6060^\circ. From another point 20 m away from this point on the line joing this point to the foot of the tower, the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is 3030^\circ (see Fig. 9.12). Find the height of the tower and the width of the canal.

Solution
Understand the Question
  • Let AB=hAB = h be the height of the vertical TV tower and BC=xBC = x be the width of the canal.
  • Point CC is on the opposite bank with angle of elevation ACB=60\angle ACB = 60^\circ.
  • Point DD is 20 m20\text{ m} further away on the line joining CC to the foot of the tower, so the total base length BD=x+20BD = x + 20 with angle of elevation ADB=30\angle ADB = 30^\circ.
  • Using the trigonometric ratio tanθ=OppositeAdjacent\tan \theta = \dfrac{\text{Opposite}}{\text{Adjacent}} in right-angled triangles ΔABC\Delta ABC and ΔABD\Delta ABD, we form two equations to solve for hh and xx.

Step 1 · Form equation from ΔABC\Delta ABC

Let the height of the tower AB=hAB = h and the width of the canal BC=xBC = x.Diagram 1

In right ΔABC\Delta ABC

tan60=OppositeAdjacenttan60=ABBC3=hxh=x3(1)\begin{aligned} \tan 60^\circ &= \dfrac{\text{Opposite}}{\text{Adjacent}} \\[0.6em] \tan 60^\circ &= \dfrac{AB}{BC} \\[0.6em] \sqrt{3} &= \dfrac{h}{x} \\[0.6em] h &= x\sqrt{3} \quad \dots (1) \end{aligned}

Step 2 · Form equation from ΔABD\Delta ABD and find canal width

In right ΔABD\Delta ABD, base BD=BC+CD=x+20 mBD = BC + CD = x + 20\text{ m}.

tan30=ABBD13=hx+20h3=x+20(2)\begin{aligned} \tan 30^\circ &= \dfrac{AB}{BD} \\[0.6em] \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}} &= \dfrac{h}{x + 20} \\[0.6em] h\sqrt{3} &= x + 20 \quad \dots (2) \end{aligned}

Substitute h=x3h = x\sqrt{3} from equation (1)(1) into equation (2)(2)

(x3)3=x+203x=x+203xx=202x=20x=202=10 m\begin{aligned} (x\sqrt{3})\sqrt{3} &= x + 20 \\[0.6em] 3x &= x + 20 \\[0.6em] 3x - x &= 20 \\[0.6em] 2x &= 20 \\[0.6em] x &= \dfrac{20}{2} = 10\text{ m} \end{aligned}

Step 3 · Calculate the height of the tower

Substitute x=10 mx = 10\text{ m} into equation (1)(1)

h=x3h=103 m\begin{aligned} h &= x\sqrt{3} \\[0.6em] h &= 10\sqrt{3}\text{ m} \end{aligned}
Answer

Height of the tower =103 m= 10\sqrt{3}\text{ m}, Width of the canal =10 m= 10\text{ m}

Common Mistakes
  • Base Length Error: Incorrectly taking the base of ΔABD\Delta ABD as 20 m20\text{ m} instead of BD=BC+CD=(x+20) mBD = BC + CD = (x + 20)\text{ m}.
  • Trigonometric Ratio Confusion: Inverting tangent values by taking tan60=13\tan 60^\circ = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}} instead of 3\sqrt{3}.
