Solution
Understand the Question
  • To expand the product of two polynomials, use the distributive property: multiply each term of the first polynomial by every term of the second polynomial.
  • After multiplying, combine like terms (terms with the identical variable factors raised to the same powers) by adding or subtracting their coefficients.

(i) Expand (a+ab3b2)(4+b)(a + ab - 3b^2)(4 + b)

Step 1 · Apply Distributive Property and Combine Like Terms

Distribute each term of (4+b)(4 + b) across (a+ab3b2)(a + ab - 3b^2)

(a+ab3b2)(4+b)=(a+ab3b2)×4+(a+ab3b2)×b\begin{aligned} (a + ab - 3b^2)(4 + b) &= (a + ab - 3b^2) \times 4 + (a + ab - 3b^2) \times b \end{aligned}

Multiply the terms inside each bracket

=(a×4+ab×43b2×4)+(a×b+ab×b3b2×b)=(4a+4ab12b2)+(ab+ab23b3)\begin{aligned} &= (a \times 4 + ab \times 4 - 3b^2 \times 4) + (a \times b + ab \times b - 3b^2 \times b) \\[0.6em] &= (4a + 4ab - 12b^2) + (ab + ab^2 - 3b^3) \end{aligned}

Group and combine like terms (4ab4ab and abab)

=4a+4ab12b2+ab+ab23b3=4a+(4ab+ab)12b2+ab23b3=4a+5ab12b2+ab23b3\begin{aligned} &= 4a + 4ab - 12b^2 + ab + ab^2 - 3b^3 \\[0.6em] &= 4a + (4ab + ab) - 12b^2 + ab^2 - 3b^3 \\[0.6em] &= 4a + 5ab - 12b^2 + ab^2 - 3b^3 \end{aligned}
Answer

(i) 4a+5ab12b2+ab23b34a + 5ab - 12b^2 + ab^2 - 3b^3

(ii) Expand (4y+7)(y+11z3)(4y + 7)(y + 11z - 3)

Step 1 · Apply Distributive Property and Combine Like Terms

Distribute each term of (4y+7)(4y + 7) across (y+11z3)(y + 11z - 3)

(4y+7)(y+11z3)=4y×(y+11z3)+7×(y+11z3)\begin{aligned} (4y + 7)(y + 11z - 3) &= 4y \times (y + 11z - 3) + 7 \times (y + 11z - 3) \end{aligned}

Multiply the terms inside each bracket

=(4y×y+4y×11z+4y×(3))+(7×y+7×11z+7×(3))=(4y2+44yz12y)+(7y+77z21)\begin{aligned} &= (4y \times y + 4y \times 11z + 4y \times (-3)) + (7 \times y + 7 \times 11z + 7 \times (-3)) \\[0.6em] &= (4y^2 + 44yz - 12y) + (7y + 77z - 21) \end{aligned}

Group and combine like terms (12y-12y and 7y7y)

=4y2+44yz12y+7y+77z21=4y2+44yz+(12y+7y)+77z21=4y2+44yz5y+77z21\begin{aligned} &= 4y^2 + 44yz - 12y + 7y + 77z - 21 \\[0.6em] &= 4y^2 + 44yz + (-12y + 7y) + 77z - 21 \\[0.6em] &= 4y^2 + 44yz - 5y + 77z - 21 \end{aligned}
Answer

(ii) 4y2+44yz5y+77z214y^2 + 44yz - 5y + 77z - 21

Common Mistakes
  • Treating Unlike Terms as Like Terms: Confusing terms with different powers, such as adding abab and ab2ab^2 together. Only terms with identical variable parts and powers can be combined.
  • Sign Errors in Multiplication: Forgetting that multiplying a positive term by a negative term yields a negative result, e.g., 4y×(3)=12y4y \times (-3) = -12y and 7×(3)=217 \times (-3) = -21.
  • Missing Terms: Missing a multiplication when distributing across a trinomial. A binomial times a trinomial initially produces 2×3=62 \times 3 = 6 terms before combining like terms.
