Using the same symbol for different things can cause confusion.
Step 1 — See Lakhanpal's pictograph
Lakhanpal's graph shows absent students. He used the symbol ☺ for 1 absent student. Look at Class I in his graph. It shows 3 absent students.

Step 2 — See Jarina and Sangita's data
Jarina and Sangita's table shows present students. Look at Class I in their table. It shows 3 present students. Class VIII has 7 present students.

Step 3 — Find the challenges
Lakhanpal used ☺ for an absent student. Jarina and Sangita want to use ☺ for a present student. This is the first challenge. The same symbol would mean two different things. This can confuse people looking at the graphs. It makes understanding the data hard.
The second challenge is about many students. If a class has many present students, like 40. They would need to draw 40 smileys. Drawing so many symbols takes a lot of space. It also makes counting the symbols difficult. This makes the pictograph hard to read.
Answer
(i) The symbol ☺ means 1 absent student in Lakhanpal's graph. If Jarina and Sangita use ☺ for 1 present student, it will cause confusion because the same symbol means different things. (ii) If there are many present students in a class, drawing one symbol for each student will make the pictograph very long. This makes it hard to read and count the symbols.
