Solution
Understand the Question
  • A circular brooch is made with silver wire along the boundary (circumference) as well as along 55 diameters.
  • Given diameter d=35 mmd = 35\text{ mm}, which gives a radius of r=352 mmr = \dfrac{35}{2}\text{ mm}.
  • The total wire length is the sum of the circumference of the circle and the length of the 55 diameters: Total Length=2πr+5d\text{Total Length} = 2\pi r + 5d
  • The 55 diameters divide the circle into 1010 equal sectors, each having a central angle of θ=36010=36\theta = \dfrac{360^\circ}{10} = 36^\circ.

(i) Find the total length of the silver wire required.

Step 1 · Calculate the Total Length of Wire

Given diameter d=35 mmd = 35\text{ mm} and radius r=352 mmr = \dfrac{35}{2}\text{ mm}.Diagram 1

Circumference of the circle

C=π×d=227×35=22×5=110 mm\begin{aligned} C &= \pi \times d \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{22}{7} \times 35 \\[0.6em] &= 22 \times 5 \\[0.6em] &= 110\text{ mm} \end{aligned}

Length of 5 diameters

Length of 5 diameters=5×35=175 mm\begin{aligned} \text{Length of 5 diameters} &= 5 \times 35 \\[0.6em] &= 175\text{ mm} \end{aligned}

Total length of wire required

Total length of wire=Circumference+Length of 5 diameters=110+175=285 mm\begin{aligned} \text{Total length of wire} &= \text{Circumference} + \text{Length of 5 diameters} \\[0.6em] &= 110 + 175 \\[0.6em] &= 285\text{ mm} \end{aligned}
Answer

(i) 285 mm285\text{ mm}

(ii) Find the area of each sector of the brooch.

Step 1 · Calculate the Area of Each Sector

The circle is divided into 10 equal sectors. Central angle of each sector

θ=36010=36\begin{aligned} \theta &= \dfrac{360^\circ}{10} \\[0.6em] &= 36^\circ \end{aligned}

Area of each sector

Area of a sector=θ360×πr2=36360×227×(352)2=110×227×352×352=110×22×52×352=110×11×5×352=110×55×352=12×111×352=3854 mm2=96.25 mm2\begin{aligned} \text{Area of a sector} &= \dfrac{\theta}{360^\circ} \times \pi r^2 \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{36^\circ}{360^\circ} \times \dfrac{22}{7} \times \left(\dfrac{35}{2}\right)^2 \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{1}{10} \times \dfrac{22}{7} \times \dfrac{35}{2} \times \dfrac{35}{2} \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{1}{10} \times 22 \times \dfrac{5}{2} \times \dfrac{35}{2} \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{1}{10} \times 11 \times 5 \times \dfrac{35}{2} \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{1}{10} \times 55 \times \dfrac{35}{2} \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{1}{2} \times \dfrac{11}{1} \times \dfrac{35}{2} \\[0.6em] &= \dfrac{385}{4}\text{ mm}^2 = 96.25\text{ mm}^2 \end{aligned}
Answer

(ii) 3854 mm2 (or 96.25 mm2)\dfrac{385}{4}\text{ mm}^2\text{ (or } 96.25\text{ mm}^2\text{)}

Common Mistakes
  • Omitting Diameters from Wire Length: Calculating only the circumference and forgetting to add the length of the 55 silver wire diameters (5×35 mm5 \times 35\text{ mm}).
  • Using Diameter as Radius: Substituting r=35 mmr = 35\text{ mm} instead of r=352 mmr = \dfrac{35}{2}\text{ mm} in the sector area formula θ360πr2\dfrac{\theta}{360^\circ}\pi r^2.
  • Miscounting Sectors: Assuming 55 diameters create 55 sectors instead of 1010 equal sectors (2×5=102 \times 5 = 10).
