Do you know that there are some places in India where temperatures can go below 0°C? Find out the places in India where temperatures sometimes go below 0°C. What is common among these places? Why does it become colder there and not in other places?
We will find places in India that get very cold and understand why this happens.
Step 1 — Cold Places in India
Let us think about where it gets very cold in India. These places are usually in the mountains. We know mountains are very high up.
Some places where temperatures can go below 0°C are:
- Leh and Kargil are in Ladakh.
- Drass is in Jammu and Kashmir.
- Gulmarg and Pahalgam are also in Jammu and Kashmir.
- Shimla and Manali are in Himachal Pradesh.
- Auli and Kedarnath are in Uttarakhand.
- Tawang is in Arunachal Pradesh.
- Gangtok is in Sikkim.
These places are all in the northern and north-eastern parts of India. They are all found in or near the mighty Himalayan mountains. These mountains are very high above sea level.
It becomes colder in these places because of their great height. This is called high altitude. The air gets thinner as we go higher. Thin air cannot hold much heat. So, the sun's warmth does not stay. This makes these places very cold. Temperatures can drop below 0°C. This happens especially during winter. Plains and coastal areas stay much warmer.
Step 2 — Matching Temperatures to Time
We need to match temperatures to the right time of day or night. Let us think about how temperature changes. It is usually warmest in the afternoon. It gets colder as the sun sets. It is coldest just before the sun rises.
Let us match the given temperatures:

The warmest temperature is 14°C. This happens in the afternoon.

Now we have temperatures below zero. -2°C is cold. This happens at night.
