Solution

The border sum is the total of all numbers in the eight cells around the middle cell in a 3x3 grid.

Step 1 — Calculate Border Sum for Grid 1

Let us look at the first grid. The numbers in the border cells are the cells around the center cell. The center cell is 12. The numbers in the border cells are: 7, -19, 8, -2, -5, -9, 12, -7. We need to add these numbers together.

7+(19)+8+(2)+(5)+(9)+12+(7)7 + (-19) + 8 + (-2) + (-5) + (-9) + 12 + (-7)

=719+8259+127= 7 - 19 + 8 - 2 - 5 - 9 + 12 - 7

First, let us add all the positive numbers. 7+8+12=277 + 8 + 12 = 27

Next, let us add all the negative numbers. 192597=(19+2+5+9+7)-19 - 2 - 5 - 9 - 7 = -(19 + 2 + 5 + 9 + 7)

=(21+5+9+7)= -(21 + 5 + 9 + 7)

=(26+9+7)= -(26 + 9 + 7)

=(35+7)= -(35 + 7)

=42= -42

Now, we add the sum of positive numbers and the sum of negative numbers. 27+(42)27 + (-42)

=2742= 27 - 42

15\boxed{-15}

Step 2 — Calculate Border Sum for Grid 2

Let us look at the second grid. The numbers in the border cells are the cells around the center cell. The center cell is -19. The numbers in the border cells are: 7, 6, -17, 8, -5, -19, 5, 18. We need to add these numbers together.

7+6+(17)+8+(5)+(19)+5+187 + 6 + (-17) + 8 + (-5) + (-19) + 5 + 18

=7+617+8519+5+18= 7 + 6 - 17 + 8 - 5 - 19 + 5 + 18

First, let us add all the positive numbers. 7+6+8+5+18=447 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 18 = 44

Next, let us add all the negative numbers. 17519=(17+5+19)-17 - 5 - 19 = -(17 + 5 + 19)

=(22+19)= -(22 + 19)

=41= -41

Now, we add the sum of positive numbers and the sum of negative numbers. 44+(41)44 + (-41)

=4441= 44 - 41

3\boxed{3}
