Draw the rectangle and four squares configuration (shown in Fig. 8.3) on a dot paper.

What did you do to recreate this figure so that the four squares are placed symmetrically around the rectangle? Discuss with your classmates.

Solution

We will use the dots on the paper to measure and draw our shapes.

Step 1 — Draw the main rectangle

Let us start by drawing the rectangle in the middle. We pick four dots to be its corners. We can make it 6 dot-spaces wide. We can make it 3 dot-spaces high. We connect these dots with straight lines.

Step 2 — Draw the four squares

Now, we draw the four squares around the rectangle. All four squares must be the same size. Let us make each square 2 dot-spaces long on every side. To place them symmetrically, we make sure the space between each square and the rectangle is the same.

  • For the top-left square, we count 1 dot-space to the left of the rectangle's left edge. We also count 1 dot-space above the rectangle's top edge. We draw a 2 by 2 dot-space square there.
  • For the top-right square, we count 1 dot-space to the right of the rectangle's right edge. We also count 1 dot-space above the rectangle's top edge. We draw another 2 by 2 dot-space square there.
  • For the bottom-left square, we count 1 dot-space to the left of the rectangle's left edge. We also count 1 dot-space below the rectangle's bottom edge. We draw a 2 by 2 dot-space square there.
  • For the bottom-right square, we count 1 dot-space to the right of the rectangle's right edge. We also count 1 dot-space below the rectangle's bottom edge. We draw the last 2 by 2 dot-space square there.

This way, all squares are the same size. They are also equally spaced from the central rectangle. This makes the whole figure symmetrical.

Answer

Draw a rectangle using four dots and draw four squares to make sure all the squares are equal in size and placed around the rectangle in symmetry.
