Step 1 — Find the capacity of one bus

Last year, we had 162 people and 3 buses. All the buses were full. Let CC be the capacity of one bus. We can find the capacity by dividing the total number of people by the number of buses.

Step 2 — Calculate buses needed this year

This year, we have 204 students. We will use the bus capacity of 54 people per bus to find how many buses are needed. Let NN be the number of buses we need this year.

We perform the division: 204÷54=3 with a remainder204 \div 54 = 3 \text{ with a remainder} This means 3 buses will be completely full. We need to find the remainder to see how many students are left. The number of students in 3 full buses is 3×54=1623 \times 54 = 162. The remaining students are 204162=42204 - 162 = 42. These 42 students will need an additional bus. So, the total number of buses needed is 3+1=43 + 1 = 4.

Since the fourth bus has 42 students, and its capacity is 54 students, it will not be full.
