Blue and yellow paints are mixed in the ratio of $3 : 5$ to produce green paint. To produce $40\text{ mL}$ of green paint, how much of these two colours are needed? To make the paint a lighter shade of green, I added $20\text{ mL}$ of yellow to the mixture. What is the new ratio of blue and yellow in the paint?

Common Mistakes

Adding to Both Quantities: Incorrectly adding the $20\text{ mL}$ to both blue and yellow paints instead of only to the yellow paint.
Reversing the Ratio Terms: Expressing the final ratio as yellow to blue ( $3 : 1$ ) instead of blue to yellow ( $1 : 3$ ).
Unsimplified Ratio: Leaving the ratio as $15 : 45$ without dividing by the greatest common factor ( $15$ ) to write it in simplest form.
