Question 10
Compare and write '<', '>' or '=':
(a) 30 thousand ______ 3 lakhs
(b) 500 lakhs ______ 5 million
(c) 800 thousand ______ 8 million
(d) 640 crore ______ 60 billion
We will convert all numbers to their standard numerical form to compare them.
Step 1 — Comparing 30 thousand and 3 lakhs
First, let us write 30 thousand as a number. We know that 1 thousand is 1,000. So, 30 thousand is 30 times 1,000.
Next, let us write 3 lakhs as a number. We know that 1 lakh is 100,000. So, 3 lakhs is 3 times 100,000.
Now, we compare 30,000 and 300,000. Clearly, 30,000 is smaller than 300,000.
Step 2 — Comparing 500 lakhs and 5 million
First, let us write 500 lakhs as a number. We know that 1 lakh is 100,000. So, 500 lakhs is 500 times 100,000.
Next, let us write 5 million as a number. We know that 1 million is 1,000,000. So, 5 million is 5 times 1,000,000.
Now, we compare 50,000,000 and 5,000,000. Clearly, 50,000,000 is larger than 5,000,000.
Step 3 — Comparing 800 thousand and 8 million
First, let us write 800 thousand as a number. We know that 1 thousand is 1,000. So, 800 thousand is 800 times 1,000.
Next, let us write 8 million as a number. We know that 1 million is 1,000,000. So, 8 million is 8 times 1,000,000.
Now, we compare 800,000 and 8,000,000. Clearly, 800,000 is smaller than 8,000,000.
Step 4 — Comparing 640 crore and 60 billion
First, let us write 640 crore as a number. We know that 1 crore is 10,000,000. So, 640 crore is 640 times 10,000,000.
Next, let us write 60 billion as a number. We know that 1 billion is 1,000,000,000. So, 60 billion is 60 times 1,000,000,000.
Now, we compare 6,400,000,000 and 60,000,000,000. Clearly, 6,400,000,000 is smaller than 60,000,000,000.
Answer
(a) 30 thousand < 3 lakhs (b) 500 lakhs > 5 million (c) 800 thousand < 8 million (d) 640 crore < 60 billion
