The Tedious Tens machine adds 10 every time we press its button.

Step 1 — Understanding the machine's operation

The machine starts at zero. Each press adds 10 to the current number. Let us call the number of times the button is pressed 'P'. Let us call the number shown on the screen 'S'. If we press the button once, the screen shows 10. If we press it twice, it shows 10+10=2010 + 10 = 20. This means the number on the screen is always 10 multiplied by the number of presses.

So, we can write this relationship: S=P×10S = P \times 10

To find the number of presses needed for a target number, we can rearrange this. We divide the target number by 10. P=S÷10P = S \div 10

Step 2 — Finding presses for Five hundred

We want the screen to show 500. We use the formula for the number of presses. P=500÷10P = 500 \div 10 P=50P = 50
