  2. Group 1: 4 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 7 children. Group 2: 5 glasses of sugarcane juice divided equally among 7 children.

We compare fractions to find the larger share.

Step 1 — Compare shares in Problem 1

First, we write the share for each child. Group 1: 3 glasses for 4 children. Each child gets 3/43/4 of a glass. Group 2: 7 glasses for 10 children. Each child gets 7/107/10 of a glass. We need to compare 3/43/4 and 7/107/10. Let us find a common bottom number. The smallest common bottom number is 20. We change 3/43/4 to have 20 at the bottom.

34=3×54×5\frac{3}{4} = \frac{3 \times 5}{4 \times 5}

=1520= \frac{15}{20}

We change 7/107/10 to have 20 at the bottom.

710=7×210×2\frac{7}{10} = \frac{7 \times 2}{10 \times 2}

=1420= \frac{14}{20}

Now we compare 15/2015/20 and 14/2014/20. 15/2015/20 is bigger than 14/2014/20. So, Group 1 children get more juice.

Step 2 — Compare shares in Problem 2

First, we write the share for each child. Group 1: 4 glasses for 7 children. Each child gets 4/74/7 of a glass. Group 2: 5 glasses for 7 children. Each child gets 5/75/7 of a glass. We need to compare 4/74/7 and 5/75/7. The bottom number is already the same. We just compare the top numbers. 5 is bigger than 4. So, 5/75/7 is bigger than 4/74/7. Group 2 children get more juice.

Step 3 — Which comparison was easier?

Comparing Problem 2 was easier. In Problem 2, both groups had 7 children. The bottom number of the fractions was the same. We only needed to compare the top numbers. In Problem 1, the bottom numbers were different. We had to change them to be the same. This took an extra step.

Answer

(i) For the first problem, Group 1 gets a larger share. (ii) For the second problem, Group 2 gets a larger share. (iii) The second problem was easier to compare. This is because the number of children was the same in both groups. So, we just compared the number of glasses.
