Question 19

A car runs 16 km using 1 litre of petrol. How far will it go using 2342 \frac{3}{4} litres of petrol?

Check your answer with HomiSolve it yourself, then let Homi check your steps and spot mistakes.
Solution

We will multiply the distance covered per litre by the total amount of petrol.

Step 1 — Convert mixed fraction

The amount of petrol is given as a mixed fraction. Let us convert 2342 \frac{3}{4} litres to an improper fraction. First, multiply the whole number by the denominator. Then, add the numerator to this result. Keep the same denominator.

234=(2×4)+342 \frac{3}{4} = \frac{(2 \times 4) + 3}{4}

=8+34= \frac{8 + 3}{4}

114 litres\boxed{\frac{11}{4} \text{ litres}}

Diagram 1

Step 2 — Calculate total distance

The car runs 16 km using 1 litre of petrol. We need to find the distance for 114\frac{11}{4} litres. We multiply the distance per litre by the total litres.

Total distance=16 km/litre×114 litres\text{Total distance} = 16 \text{ km/litre} \times \frac{11}{4} \text{ litres}

=16×114 km= \frac{16 \times 11}{4} \text{ km}

We can simplify this calculation. Divide 16 by 4.

=4×11 km= 4 \times 11 \text{ km}

=44 km= 44 \text{ km}

Answer

(i) The car will go 44 km.
