We will count the objects in each picture and then determine the largest group size that can be recognized instantly without counting.

Step 1 — Counting Objects

Let us carefully examine each picture. We will count the number of distinct objects or groups in each box.

The top-left box has 2 chickens. The top-middle box has 1 bunch of yellow flowers. The top-right box has 4 Matryoshka dolls. The middle-left box has 1 set of stairs. The middle-middle box has 1 dog. The middle-right box has 1 bunch of grapes. The bottom-left box has 6 apples. The bottom-middle box has 8 pencils. The bottom-right box has 3 pyramids.

Step 2 — Identifying Subitizable Group Size

Subitizing is the ability to quickly see how many objects there are. This happens without needing to count them one by one. We look for the largest number of objects we can instantly recognize.

The counts we found are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8. Most people can immediately see 1, 2, 3, or 4 objects. For groups of 6 apples or 8 pencils, we usually need to count them. Therefore, the largest group size we can immediately see is 4.
